Six Feet Of Distance And Together As A Community.
An important function of our Coconino County Government is providing a social safety net for our most vulnerable members. The coronavirus pandemic has created many disruptions to our society including emergency challenges to our health, family and social networks, and local businesses and workforce. Our tourist based economy has been hit particularly hard. True to the values of our community, we step up.
Our County Government has taken the lead in providing a social safety net. The requests for County rental and utility assistance have increased tenfold and the County has set up the Aspen Hotel to provide a safe space for those without housing who face a COVID-19 diagnosis. The Arizona Department of Health Services with support from the County is assessing the former Walgreen’s distribution center as an emergency low acuity medical facility. Although there is much more testing to be done, the County was first in the state to set up drive up testing sites and has expanded the testing locations to serve the communities of Tusayan and Williams.
Our non-profits are also doing what they can to meet increased demands. The Family Food Center has tripled its distribution of food boxes and hot meals and St Mary’s Food Bank has enlisted volunteers to distribute food throughout our expansive County. Flagstaff Shelter Services has increased their bed capacity and opened a day facility for those in need of a safe place. Arizona Community Foundation of Flagstaff and it’s collaborators have granted over $361,200 to regional nonprofits.
The ongoing needs of citizens continue to be immense. The United Way of Northern Arizona has spearheaded a COVID-19 Fund and has raised and distributed over $200,000 to help meet ever expanding needs. But we need your support! If you can, please dig deep and be part of this great community effort. The United Way of Northern Arizona COVID-19 Fund donation link is provided below. Please donate.
For the health and safety of ourselves and our community we maintain social distancing but not social isolation. Together as a community we will get through this. Thank you so much. Be well. Take heart.
